Tool Guru Tips of the Month

 Detail Sanders

This month, I'm going to discuss one of the hottest tools during the holidays last year, the corner detail sanders. There are several different models on the market with a tremendous difference in prices. So what makes them so different? Let's take a look.

The basic premise of this tool is to take a triangular piece of paper, adhere it to a pad, and sand right into the corners of your work surface, thus eliminating the need for hand sanding. Most machines work by oscillating, or vibrating back & forth in a tight pattern, while one machine works in an in-line, or back and forth motion. Both methods seem to work well. Let's take a look at the manufacturers offerings, and give you my opinions of each.

Bosch introduced a different model, Model 1294VSK, which is a variable speed model. The speeds do come in handy when working with coarser grit sandpaper, as it is easier to determine the amount of material you are removing, and on certain man made surfaces, it will reduce the chance of burning your material. This machine is available for under $150.

Next is the Fein Model 636. This is also a variable speed model, and is by far the best constructed triangular sander on the market. It features the most powerful motor, and the least vibration of all models. It is, consequently, the most expensive model, selling for under ut does include a carrying case and sandpaper assortment. This tool is well worth the money, but I recommend it more for production applications than for the hobbyist. Fein also includes a scraper blade and a saw blade for cutting wood, which makes this the most versatile tool on the market.

As always, I encourage you to e-mail me any questions or comments. I will get back to you with a quick answer. Speak to you again next month!
