Random Orbit Sanders
As I am sure you
are all aware, using the proper tool on your project can
save you time, as well as giving your project that
professional look we all desire. It's for this reason
that this month, I'm going to discuss random orbit
sanders.
Random orbits are
relatively new to the market, having been known as DA's
or dual action sanders in the older pneumatic version.
What random orbits effectively did was to revolutionize
finish sanding. Before random orbits existed, the
finishing phase was completed with both 1/4 sheet and 1/2
sheet finishing sanders. These machines were orbital, and
gave your project a nice, clean finish.
Random orbits work on a system
just as their name states, they random each orbit.
Instead of a circular motion, these machines follow
almost a figure eight motion. Because of this motion, you will be left with a swirl free finish, something you
couldn't achieve with conventional finishing sanders.
There are two basic types of
random orbits on the market today. The first is the
larger and more aggressive right angle models, and the
other is the smaller palm grip model. Let's go into some
detail on both.
The right angle models are, for
the most part, available in either 5" or 6"
versions, and most offer variable speed, a feature that
will help when finishing surfaces that tend to burn when
finished at faster speeds. Most are available with either
PSA or hook & loop pads, for use with either
sandpaper system. These machines, when used at the faster
speeds, can be very aggressive, and can be used to take
down stock. When used at slower speeds with very fine
sandpaper, they make great finishing sanders.
The little palm grip units are
strictly used for finishing applications. In most cases,
the finer the sandpaper, the better the finish. Your
finish will be swirl free, and these sanders are
extremely user friendly. A wonderful feature of most, is
a braking system for the pad, which will prevent the
gouging of your material. The way it works is that the
pad doesn't pick up speed until after it makes contact
with the surface to be sanded. This make these sanders
incredibly easy to use, whether you're just starting out
in the hobby, or a master woodworker.
As far as the different features
are concerned, most of these tools are available with
either PSA or hook & loop pads, most offer dust
extraction, as well as variable
speed, which can be an added plus.
